Yeah it's a winter coat...heh I started around mid-December and didn't work on it again till April. It's not really cold enough to wear it much anymore, but at least I'll be sure to have something to wear next winter : )
It was quite a challenge making a pattern for a fitted patchwork coat without ruining the design. And it was a really big pain to get all the pieces to stay symmetrical and line up in the front (which obviously didn't quite work...heh) There are somewhere around 200 diamond-shaped patches on this coat.... Materials used: silk jacquard, silk/rayon blend something (don't know if there's a special term for it...), rayon velvet, a purple sweater and some purple-ish faux fur. Lined in pongé silk backed with thick vilene(?) for extra warmth (I don't know what that stuff's called in English...) I dyed eveything but the sweater and fur myself. So, was I absolutely insane to do this? Yes. Will I ever be doing this again? Never never never...though I must say I'm quite pleased with the result : ) Oh yeah I know I should get some detail shots up the different fabrics really have very nice textures and colours...but I was lazy and maybe I'll get around to doing that in the next couple of days... Just in case you're interested, here's a pic of how it looked when I just started out [link] Worn with my boots Daily DeviationGiven 2009-10-05Patchwork Coat by ~StellarReverie. One aspect of clothing design that can be very difficult to master is the matching up of prints along seams and darts, most especially if they're curved. The suggester said that, "~StellarReverie says she was insane to take 200 pieces of diamond-shaped fabric (most of which she dyed herself) and put them together into a fitted coat. Maybe she was, but now at least she has one rockin' coat. The photo on the right is my favorite because it really shows the amount of thought that went into this with the diamonds on the arms lined up with the diamonds in the body, which is especially visible on the left arm. Even the diamonds in the hood line up with the rest down the back." (Suggested by ~flutterbyfae and Featured by `Kitten-of-Woe) |
